What AUSTRAC announced

On 7 September 2026, AUSTRAC said it had cancelled, suspended or refused renewal of 45 remittance and virtual asset service provider registrations during the previous year. This was an enforcement communication describing actions already taken—not new legislation, an amended Rule, new substantive guidance or a new commencement date.

AUSTRAC attributed the actions to issues including insufficient operational capacity, inactivity, insolvency, incorrect registration, failure to notify material changes and significant money-laundering or terrorism-financing risk.

The relevant operating lesson

Registration consequences apply directly to remitters and virtual asset service providers. For conveyancing and real-estate reporting entities, the proportionate response is a control that confirms the correct AUSTRAC enrolment position, separately records whether registration is actually applicable, keeps the AUSTRAC Online profile current and makes regulator correspondence visible to accountable people.

  • Verify whether the business should be on the Reporting Entities Roll and whether any separate registration is actually applicable.
  • Reconcile designated services, legal entity details, key contacts and reporting-group information against AUSTRAC Online at least quarterly and when a material change occurs.
  • Record the reviewer, date, safe evidence reference and next review date without copying credentials or sensitive case material.
  • Assess material changes promptly—AUSTRAC guidance says reporting entities must update enrolment details within 14 days of a change.
  • Escalate regulator notices, suspension or cancellation indicators and unresolved status discrepancies to the AMLCO and accountable management.

Keep the advice correctly scoped

A status register supports operational follow-through; it does not decide whether a service is legally designated or whether registration is required. AUSTRAC says conveyancers and real-estate businesses generally enrol rather than register, while remitters and specialised virtual asset service providers have additional registration requirements. Refer uncertain classifications or legal questions to appropriately qualified advisers.
